Dmitry Abramov, M.d., M.s.

 

Dr. Abramov is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in the division of Cardiology. His clinical and research interests are in Advanced Heart Failure, Heart Transplantation, Ventricular Assist Devices, and Echocardiography. George Aronoff, M.D., M.S, FACP 

 

Dr. Aronoff served for many years at the University of Louisville as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Nephrology and Pharmacology, Medical Director of the University of Louisville Dialysis Unit and as the Nephrology Fellowship Program Director.  He is currently the Assistant Chief Medical Officer at Renal Ventures Management in Colorado. Lorrel Brown, M.D.

 

Dr. Brown is an Assistant Professor at the University of Louisville and is the Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Medicine fellowship. Her medical training was completed at Johns Hopkins University. She recently won the Clinical Faculty Teaching Award from the residents. Her areas of interest in cardiac critical care, post-graduate medical education, and in-hospital cardiac arrest. Her faculty profile can be found here

  • Aortic Stenosis and General Valvular Principles (Or When Aortic Stenosis Gets Ugly) - In this lecture, Dr. Brown covers the basics aortic stenosis assessment and management as well as general principles for other valvular diseases.

  • Cardiac Tamponade and Miscellaneous Cardiomyopathies -  she discusses tamponade cardiac physiology (including demystifying pulsus pardoxus). She continues to cover the differentiation of constrictive and restrictive cardiomyopathies.

  • Emergency Arrhythmias 101-  (Or Why Electricity is Good For Patients) - In this lecture, she covers the basics of emergent arrhythmias.

  •  Bradyarrhythmias - a thorough review of aortic stenosis using cases: from making the diagnosis to management for asymptomatic and symptomatic stenosis including TAVR. 

  • Shock and Hemodynamics in the ICU - the basics of shock including how to recognize cardiac shock from history, physical exam and invasive monitoring. 

  • Mechanical Complications of Myocardial Infarctions - covers the common results of MI in a case-based approach. She includes papillary muscle and free wall rupture, mitral regurgitation, VSDs, RV infarct, aneurysm, pericarditis and arrhythmias. 

  • Acute Coronary Syndromes 101 -  Dr. Lorrel Brown covers ACS basics: coronary perfusion, types of myocardial infarction, and how to diagnose MI using history exam and EKG findings. She reviews ACS risk scores, acute treatment of ACS and some common pitfalls.

  • Hypertensive Crisis - Dr. Brown describes hypertensive crisis as having severely elevated blood pressure with end-organ damage. She then discusses the pathophysiology of end organ damage along with the different treatment approaches for hypertensive crisis.

  • Cardiac Arrest: Can Education Improve Outcomes? - CPR skill retention rates under current methods of instruction and finishes with different ways in which ongoing educational efforts seek to improve outcomes following cardiac arrest. 

  • CV Prevention - Dr. Brown first Life's Simple 7 approach to prevention of cardiovascular disease as well as how to apply appropriate screening methods for LS7 in clinic patients. She then discusses how to properly treat conditions associate with LS7.


Anna Burke, D.O.

 

Dr. Anna Burke presented this talk at the University of Louisville as she neared the end of her chief residency. She is currently a member of the Internal Medicine Faculty at the University of Michigan. Her faculty profile can be found here

  • An Approach to Low Back Pain - (Or Proving Once Again Narcotics are Not First Line Therapy) - Dr. Burke is trained in Osteopathic Medicine and she shares her outstanding approach to low back pain.


Eric C. Burton, M.D.

 

Dr. Eric Burton attended the University of Michigan Medical School, completed his residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals and his fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco. His clinical interest is in adult neuro-oncology and his board certifications include the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and Neuro-Oncology. Click here to visit his faculty profile.

  • Neuro-Oncology - (Brain Tumor) Dr. Burton explains CNS tumors, common gliomas, histological classification of tumors and the epidemiolgy of primary brain and CNS tumors.


David Casey, M.D.

 

Dr. Casey is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville in the division of Psychiatry. He also serves as the Senior Vice Chair and Head of Clinical Services for the Department of Psychiatry.  He received training at University of Louisville and University of Washington Schools of Medicine. His special interest is geriatric psychiatry, psychiatry history, and psychiatric medical education.  His faculty profile can be found here.

  • Mood Disorders - In this lecture, Dr. Casey reviews mood disorders for the general internist.


Dawn Caster, M.D. 

 

Dr. Caster is an Assistant Professor with the University of Louisville in the division of Nephrology. Her clinical interest is in glomerulonephritis and lupus nephritis. Her faculty profile can be found here.

Ruth Carrico Ph.D, FSHEA, RN, CIC

 

Dr. Carrico an Associate Professor with the University Of Louisville School Of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases.  Dr. Carrico has received training specific for healthcare epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). Amit Dwivedi, M.D., RVT, RPVI, FACS  

 

Dr. Dwivedi is an associate professor and Chief of the Vascular Surgery Division at the University of Louisville. His clinical interests are endovascular aortic repair and hemodialysis access. His faculty profile can be found here


Karim El-Kersh, M.D.

 

Dr. El-Kersh is currently a Sleep Medicine trained Pulmonologist at the University of Louisville. He completed his Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine fellowships in Louisville. We are fortunate that he stayed with the university of has continued to be very active in education and research. His clinical interests include pulmonary hypertension and sleep-related disorders. His profile can be found on the fellowship website here

  • Pulmonary and Critical Care Review - (Or More Than An Internist Ever Needed to Know) - In this compilation of four lectures, he gives a comprehensive boards-style review of pulmonary and critical care medicine for the internist.

  • Introduction to Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension - Dr. El-Kersh discusses the classification of Pulmonary Hypertension as well as the definition of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. He then discusses the pathophysiology, pathology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

  • Introduction of OSA - Dr. Karim El-Kersh discusses the definition, physiology, and risk factors of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. He then discusses diagnosis, consequences, and lastly, treatment.


LORI EARNSHAW, M.D., F.A.A.H.P.M.

 

Dr. Earnshaw is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville and the Section Chief of Palliative Medicine where she is the Director of the Palliative Medicine Fellowship and Clerkship as well as the Director of the University of Louisville Palliative Care Program.   • Discussing DNR Orders - Dr. Lori Earnshaw covers how to conduct a clear, effective discussion of DNR including indications and outcomes of CPR and how to approach conflicts about code status in a case-based method.


Martin Espinosa Ginic, M.D.

 

Dr. Martin Espinosa is an Electrophysiology fellow at the University of Louisville. He completed his cardiology fellowship in Louisville. He is well known as an excellent educator. Today, he works in Nasvhille, TN where he specializes in Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is affiliated with Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital. Watch him here.

  • Arrhythmia Concepts: Tachycardias - Here Dr. Espinosa discusses concepts in analyzing and approaching treatment in arrhythmias.

  • EKG Concepts - Aimed at the medical residents, this review of EKGs is accessible to a wide audience, from practitioners looking to brush up on their skills to medical students trying to improve on the basics.

  • A-fib and A-Flutter Concepts - Dr. Martin Espinosa covers differentiating A-fib from A-flutter based on ECG features. Then he delves into therapeutic options including answering some FAQs of the house staff officers. 


Russell Farmer, M.D.

 

Dr. Farmer is on faculty with University of Louisville as a General and Colorectal Surgeon. His areas of interest are inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancers. His faculty profile can be found here.

  • Acute Abdomen - Here Dr. Farmer discusses an approach to the acute abdomen from an surgeon's perspective.

  • Colon Cancer - Dr. Russ Farmer covers basic concepts of colon cancer including epidemiology and clinical decision making.

 


Juan Guardiola-Sala, M.D.

 

Dr. Guardiola is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville, the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Louisville VA hospital, and director of the sleep medicine fellowship. His faculty profile can be found here.

  • Community Acquired Pneumonia - One of the most experienced Pulmonary and ICU physicians on the Louisville faculty reviews the guidelines for diagnosis, disposition and treatment of CAP.

 


JULIE HARTING, PHARMD.

 

Julie Harting is a clinical pharmacist at University of Louisville and an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at Sullivan University. She serves on the Infectious Disease Bone and Joint team.  Her areas of interest are antimicrobial stewardship and bone and joint infections.

  • Antibiotics Review 1 - This is the first of a two part series reviewing antibiotics. This lecture focuses primarily on basic antimicrobial principles including pharmacokinetics and other fundamental principles.

  • Antibiotics Review 2 - This is the second part of a series. This lecture focuses on basic antimicrobial agents.

 


Glenn Hirsch, M.D., MHS, FACC

 

Dr. Glenn Hirsch is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville. He is the Clinical Director and Fellowship Director for the Cardiology Division. He trained at Loyola, Michigan and Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine. His areas of interest are cardiac MRI, ultrasound, and cardiac critical care. His faculty profile can be found here

  • Acute Aortic Syndromes - In this lecture, Dr. Hirsch discusses assessment and initial management of acute aortic syndromes.
